Wanton and dissipation

Them: If you’re familiar with the meanings of wanton and dissipation, could you please describe them in a way that will help me never confuse them with other words or forget their meaning?

Me: Oh, there is no way the comments to this post are going to be helpful.

And I was half right! I was just about the only person to give the asked-for definition of "dissipation". As predicted, everybody else used the science sense rather than the moral decay sense. What surprised me is that they also all defined the word "wanton" in terms of violence rather than sexual promiscuity.

Anyway, I said myself that dissipation (meaning debauchery) is an old-fashioned term and that I'm not quite sure how I even know that one off the top of my head, but then the next day I was re-reading Ancillary Justice and there it is, right in the first few chapters. Seivarden is in a bad state due to her dissipated lifestyle, and that's the word used to describe it. Huh. (But I think I already knew that word before I read the book for the first time.)

August by Dorothy Parker

When my eyes are weeds,
And my lips are petals, spinning
Down the wind that has beginning
Where the crumpled beeches start
In a fringe of salty reeds;
When my arms are elder-bushes,
And the rangy lilac pushes
Upward, upward through my heart;

Summer, do your worst!
Light your tinsel moon, and call on
Your performing stars to fall on
Headlong through your paper sky;
Nevermore shall I be cursed
By a flushed and amorous slattern,
With her dusty laces’ pattern
Trailing, as she straggles by.

Silksong!

Silksong is real! It's real and it'll be here in two weeks!! aösldks I'm so excited. I will not take Friday off because I'm too low on vacation days but I will clear my weekend (which means I have to do more chores & studying the weekend before which means I will not try out the Extreme Timed Challenge Exchange this year, ah well.)
(Ngl I was almost hoping it would come out after my exam, so in Mid-October, but I'll just have to focus so I'll study enough, because if I pass the exam I'll have more time to play after. I can do it.)

Soooooooo

How does one compose an email to say "I got a job offer that seems just on the cusp of too good to be true, but as you and your company appear to actually exist I thought I should contact you and see if it *is* legit before I delete it"?

Movies: Superman, Kpop Demon Hunters

I mostly went to the cinema to watch Superman today because I wanted to feel like I did anything, but I did have a good time.
I'm so out of ~practice watching superhero movies, I kept getting distracted by logic. But other than that I did enjoy the superhero parts, and the Superman parts. (The romance I was neutral on.)
This is another movie where the villain had a good point somewhere in there originally but left "reasonable" behind several thousand miles ago. Yes having extremely powerful metahumans/aliens that can interfere in any conflict they like apparently without any oversight is very concerning (no matter how "human" they feel) but, uh. Excellent job making this Luthor both very evil and very scary.
(I didn't like Krypto. As a "character" he was fun but I really dislike badly trained exuberant dogs and one with superpowers is so much worse.)

A few weeks ago I organized a movie night with friends to watch Kpop Demon Hunters because I'd heard so much about it and that was a great decision. Here I didn't get distracted by logic once ^^ It was just a fun time. And the songs are very catchy, too. I've already sung one at karaoke (This is what it sounds like) and tried two of them in Beat Saber (Golden was very difficult, Soda Pop on easy was indeed easy.)
I only took a brief look at fandom/fanfic but I'm not feeling that fannish about it. (I was surprised that the common assumption seems to be
spoilersthat Rumi's mother had a secret love affair with a demon - I think it might even be word of god canon - while my first thought was that she was probably raped. Fandom is also very hard on Celine, which on the one hand I understand but she was also in a super shitty position.)

This past week I listened to Verity Weaver

Which I guess I can sum up as "trenchant criticism of capitalism, maybe a little preachy, not subtle at all". This might not sound like a big endorsement, but then again, I'm pretty sure most of you are Star Trek and even Babylon 5 fans, so actually it is!

Tortoise + stars

I helped rescue a tortoise today. On our way to my parents LB and I saw it walk across a sidewalk, and after a person from a nearby garden said they didn't know of any neighbors that had tortoises I first called my friend F the biologist, who identified it as a non-native Hermann's tortoise, and then animal rescue. They told us they'd come pick it up so we took it to my parents and watched it walk around the garden for a bit, very cute. The people from animal rescue were here within the hour and said that it seems to be around 10 years old and mostly healthy, apart from some malnutrition issues. I was glad they came even though it was a bank holiday.
(It reminded me a bit of a large toad L and I saw a short while ago, that was also very cute.)

Yesterday friends and I drove outside of the city for a bit to watch the Perseids. I saw the largest shooting star I've ever seen in my life, very cool. And some normal and smaller ones, too. As soon as the moon got higher it was a lot harder to see anything, I'd underestimated just how much of a difference that would make.

A silver lining, I guess, of having a chronic skin condition is that at least I get extra warning signs from my body when my stress levels increase, sometimes that takes me a while to notice. I had a very low energy week, and the temperatures certainly didn't help. The bank holiday today was very welcome; apart from visiting my parents I mostly spent it lying in bed reading. I have more classes this weekend and then the weekend after that, so I need every extra day to relax that I can get.

So, I may have said, the niblings' stepmother* has a new baby!

Anyway, E was looking at Halloween costume patterns and obviously your opinion doesn't really matter at all, only the parents' does, but I thought I'd put up a poll anyway. Which costume is best for a six or seven month old?

Voyager episodes!

So, we watched that one with the telepathic pitcher plant. Seven and Naomi bond - the writers really worked to make Naomi useful to the plot rather than just being kinda there, and it mostly works - but honestly, our space Ahab has chosen the least-efficient manner possible to destroy his whale.

Then we watch the two parter with the Borg Queen, in which we establish that the Hansens (whom Seven actually refers to as the Hansens) were absolutely terrible parents. I mean, even beyond the way they brought their child on a platter to be assimilated, growing up on a tiny spaceship with only two other people is just no life for a child. They should have left her at home. (And all the flashbacks establish that she spent a lot of her brief childhood scared. Poor baby!) At one point in this episode, Seven helps rescue a group of astonishingly passive refugees who are about to be assimilated. There's a lot of off-screen screaming, but I guess these refugees weren't paid enough to talk, because they're both passive and totally silent. Also, nobody at any points suggests trying to de-assimilate any drones, even the one who is probably Seven's father, if we can believe the Borg Queen. Seems a bit uncaring, but as I said, he wasn't a good father so fuck him, I guess.

This is followed by a kinda sad and pointless episode in which Harry Kim contracts love from having surprisingly racy (for 90s Trek) sex with a dissident from a xenophobic society. She achieves her primary objective, forcing the people in charge to allow those who want to leave their society to do so, but they still break up. He's sad about it. (E and I decided that the only other Varro with a speaking role has gotta be her dad. He sure acts like he knows her pretty well, and that ship has a lot more people than Voyager does!)

And then one of my absolute favorite episodes, the one where Tom and B'Elanna get married and there's apparently a new baby on the ship we haven't heard of before and, by the way, the ship is disintegrating. Lots of people hate this episode because it's sad and bleak and pointless, but I absolutely fucking love it.

We skipped the Chakotay episode because ugh, fake Native American fake spirituality, something something "vision quest", and then it was Think Tank, which is a very watchable episode. It's not great, it's terrible - it's watchable. Also, nobody really says it, but the spokesperson of the eponymous Think Tank is himself a victim of it. He was taken from them in childhood, which wasn't all that long ago. Possibly they all are victims except the founder. It sounds like being part of a particularly reclusive cult.

My battleship works: Hermitcraft & Hades II

[community profile] battleshipex had author reveals. I wrote six works for team Grape: 4x Hermitcraft and 2x Hades II (under an extra spoiler cut jic. I can hardly wait for the full release of the game.) The Hermitcraft works are all rather short, mostly written rather quickly to target specific tags we needed right then, while the two Hades II fics are longer.

Overall I'm quite happy with what I wrote! Significantly more than last year for Battleship, too. By the end I was quite stressed and tired (it certainly didn't help that it was shortly after MCYT Battleship. Next year MCYT Battleship will be earlier, fortunately.)

Thieves' Bonds, Hermitcraft
1k, Grian & Cub (/Scar), fantasy AU heist
Summary: Grian and Cub are forced to work together to steal a dragon's hoard.
Notes: Inspired by the tags "dragons," "heist," and "soulbonds." Pre-Convexian in my head. It was more beautiful in my head but still, not bad.

Reckless Charge, Hermitcraft
0.5k, Tango/Etho, SF AU
Summary: Tango crashes his spaceship into Etho's greenhouse.
Notes: For the tags "spaceship," "genius," "meet-cute," and "battlesheep." I really like how this one came out.

pesky bird, dreaming, Hermitcraft
0.3k, Grian, inspired by this is about a stuffed bird
Summary: Some days it squeezed the toy over and over.
Pesky bird. Pesky bird. Pesky bird.
Notes: Like last year, a "birdification" tag hit featuring Grian. Short ficlet set after one of my favorite Hermitcraft fics, I think it came out well.

moving in, Hermitcraft
0.6k, Scar/Cub/Grian, sugar baby/fantasy AU
Summary: Scar and Cub share a mental connection. Grian doesn't mind.
Notes: Written very quickly to finish off "sugar baby AU," "mental link," and "moving in together." Silly fluff.

Hades II spoilers (barely any, mostly character appearances, but still)
A Concoction of a Certain Potency, Hades II
2.2k, Melinoe/Medea, pre-canon, dubcon, explicit
Summary: Melinoë is wearing a very short dress. Medea decides to teach her a lesson in self-control.
Notes: It is a very short dress! I really wanted to write Hades II for magic/sorcery/necromancy/mentor-mentee dynamic et al, and then somehow I got inspired and wrote my first smut fic in almost ten years. Obviously I'm a novice, but overall I like this, and I really like the scenario.

What Would Change This Time, Hades II
3.2k, Melinoe & al, time travel
Summary: „Well. Far be it from me to save you from making your own foolish mistakes," Hecate said finally.
After her ritual to travel back in time didn't take her far enough to prevent Chronos' conquest, Melinoë continues the fight.
Notes: I originally was inspired by some tags on the first board ("time travel," obviously, but also "katabasis", "secret identity" etc.), but I didn't finish this fic until the third one because I got a bit stuck after the first chapter. Writing time travel for an unfinished canon is tricky. But then I got the idea to have her meet
spoilerPatroclus
and I loved that so much that I had to finish writing it.

I've decided not to do [community profile] ficinabox this year, which on the one hand is sad because the different formats etc. are very cool, but the main creation period is in the busiest time of the year for me (work and studying) and it would be very unwise.

Maybe I'll try to reach my very vague goal of writing at least one fic for every season of the Life series this year: I'm missing Last Life, Wild Life, and Past Life (and Real and Simple Life.) Definitely doable. Or some rare Hermitcraft pairings I would like to see more of. I'll see what inspires me, no pressure.
